The Gastric Band also known as a stomach band or a Lap band is an inflatable silicone ring that is placed around the top of the stomach. It is often known as the ultimate portion controller or the gastric band diet, keeping you feeling fuller for longer.Surgery of this kind generally results in a 50% to 60% excess weight loss in 2 years.

The procedure is recommended for weight loss patients whose BMI is 30 or over (BMI Calculator), and who want a quick recovery as Gastric Band Surgery is ‘Keyhole’ or Laparoscopic and so less invasive. In addition, stomach bands may greatly improve Type 2 Diabetes, Dyslipidaemia, the amount of hypertensive medication taken, reduce continuous positive airway pressures machines for sleep apnoea, reflux disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, stress incontinence episodes, asthma episodes, joint / muscle pain and generally improve the quality of life.

But now studies have shown that the gastric band results are unreliable and inconsistent, thus this surgery is now fading away

Q: How long is the Hospital stay?

It is a one night stay.

Q: How long will I be off work?

It is recommended that you take a week off work.

Q: How much weight will I lose?

The gastric band is designed to assist you in a gradual healthy weight loss amount of around 1-2lb per week, you will need to eat healthily and follow the dietitian support and advice to get the best results from the band.

Q: How often will I need an adjustment?

This will depend on your weight loss and the restriction the band is giving you. It varies fron person to person, some patients will find they only need one or two adjustments to give enough restriction for a gradual weight loss. You cannot have band fills any more frequently than 4 weeks apart.

Q: Can it be removed?

The gastric band is designed to stay with you for life to assist you in getting to your target weight and staying at that weight. It can however be removed if you wanted to reverse the procedure.

Q: Can I get pregnant while the band is fitted?

Yes the band will not affect you getting pregnant in fact weight loss can increase fertility. If you do become pregnant, you may need to have the band loosened slightly if you are experiencing morning sickness and/or to increase your food intake as weight loss is not recommended during pregnancy.
